Licking County construction: West Main Street over Ohio 79 closes Monday for the summer

NEWARK − It’s time to roll out the barrels, orange ones, but don’t expect to have a barrel of fun as construction season gets underway in Licking County.

The West Main Street bridge over Ohio 79 will be closed all summer as the Ohio Department of Transportation replaces the bridge deck. The bridge is expected to reopen in early August, but the project will not be completed until October.

The Showman Arch Bridge on Cherry Valley Road is scheduled to reopen April 28. On Oct. 5, the deteriorating bridge closed after Federal Highway Administration engineers inspected the structure. A $1.5 million, 160-foot temporary bridge will be suspended three or four feet above the current bridge as a temporary fix until a new bridge and road opens connecting to Thornwood Drive in 2025.
