Middleburg Heights observes Arbor Day at school tree planting

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio — Arbor Day can be any day in Middleburg Heights, as evidenced by Big Creek Elementary School’s recent celebration.

Because nationally observed Arbor Day on April 28 was a rainy no-go locally, school and city officials postponed the annual tree planting ceremony. Sunny skies and warm temperatures on Friday (May 5) made it worth the wait.

City Arborist Mike Nadeo explained the various parts of the redbud sapling that stood in a hole nearby, awaiting shovelfuls of dirt from the kids. He also talked about protective measures, such as tree guard wraps, that are used to keep deer from rubbing their antlers against the trunk and harming the tree.
